Beatrice Saah with the hand sewing machine she modified with a secondhand motor.
Beatrice Saah, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
When 30-yr-old Beatrice Saah first started working with Global Mamas in the beginning of 2006, she was nervous that she would be the youngest seamstress and that her inexperience would make her stand out. 12 months later her confidence has grown and she now feels completely at ease sewing A-line dresses to the Global Mamas standards. Beatrice has used her own ingenuity to help herself become more efficient. She couldn't afford an electric sewing machine, so instead, she found a small second-hand motor and fit it onto her hand-driven machine. Beatrice has become use to standing on her own two feet. Her family lives outside of Cape Coast, and she lives in town, alone, in a one-roomed apartment. Her father died when she was three and her mother struggled to raise Beatrice, her brother and four sisters alone. After finishing school when she was 16, Beatrice helped her mother around the house and then sold bags of drinking water and meat pies on the roadside to passing traffic. She soon saved enough money to pay for sewing lessons. Beatrice has been running her own business since 2000, but when a friend working in the café next to the Global Mamas shop told her they were looking for seamstresses, she jumped at the chance. With the help of work from Global Mamas, Beatrice is delighted that she can now give her mother the same care and support Beatrice got when she was younger. "My mother brought me up so I will take care of her. She is 67 and doesn't work".
