Mercy Buckman, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
At 52, Mercy Buckman is Global Mamas' oldest seamstress and her career has had its ups and downs. After graduating from vocational school at 26, she started work as an apprentice, and within four years, she had her own business in Cape Coast. She and her husband, a statistician with the Deptartment of Health, moved to central Ghana where she started up a new business which lasted for 20 years. In 2006, Mercy, her husband and their three children moved back to Cape Coast and she started all over again, building up a new clientele. She's looking forward to starting on Global Mama's work because of the high quality demanded. Although she's currently working alone on private commissions, she's already planning to take on 4 apprentices to help with the anticipated workload. Her husband pays for the education of their three children – one still at school, the two daughters both in higher education. Mercy, however, does help support her mother and two aunts. When times are hard, they are entirely dependent on whatever she can give them. Mercy has only just joined Global Mamas and is looking forward to starting to make products in the Global Mamas range.
