Mary Brote has been involved in the collection of Shea nuts since she was a young girl, and would accompany her mother to collect Shea nuts in the Damongo area.  She has been a member of the Damango Christian Mother's Association for many years.  Mary now has five grown children; she was able to finance each of her children though school, they all completed Senior Secondary School.  Although, none of her children are living at home anymore, as they work elsewhere, all of her grandchildren live primarily in Mary's house.  She is their primary caretaker, as her husband has passed away.  Mary hopes that the work efforts with Global Mamas and the Christian Mother's of Damango will allow her to continue to care for her grandchildren, and ensure they receive a full education, as their parents were able to do.  Through working with the CMA, Mary is able to sell her Shea nuts to be processed into Shea butter for a higher price than she would receive selling her Shea nuts at the market.  In one day's work, one woman can collect enough Shea nuts to fill two bags, each bag containing between 80 and 85 kilograms.  Through CMA, Mary receives training to collect only the best quality Shea nuts, so all her collected nuts can be used to make Shea butter.
