Kate "Aba" Tay, Seamstress
Batiking & Sewing Center (Cape Coast)
Kate "Aba" Tay likes to be in control of her designs, so she never uses patterns and selects all of her fabric by hand. Kate is happy about how her business has progressed. She owns her own shop and manages six assistants. Kate also maintains a large number of regular clients who appreciate the quality of her work and her creativity. "Nobody else has the same dress my customer has," Kate states proudly. "When a customer comes in I measure and then cut the fabric freehand. It usually takes me only 10 hours to get a dress done. I create only one of a kind and that is why customers come to me." Kate is one of ten sisters, all of whom sew; it was Kate's oldest sister who sparked her interest by teaching Kate the fundamentals. Although Kate never went to school, she gained a wealth of experience from her sisters and various design-related jobs.
